Questions About Us

FAQ

  • How did Puppy Manners start?

As a child, Becky was a big animal lover, bringing stray animals home whenever the opportunity presented itself (much to her parents’ chagrin). When she was young, Becky was passionate for horseback riding, which she passed on to her daughter, Carly. So in the summer of 1994, in order to finance the purchase of their first horse, Becky decided to start “side hustling” as a dog trainer. With her labradors “Yogi” and “Magic” as her training partners, she launched her small biz and networked with local veterinarians and pet shops. It wasn’t long before the word was out and Puppy Manners was in big demand. Nearly 30 years later, Becky still loves horses AND dogs. And cats. And bunnies. And goats. And donkeys. And gerbils. And fish. And… Well, you get the idea. And Puppy Manners is more like a “hot commodity” than a “side hustle.” Much to Becky and the whole PM team’s delight!

  • Where are you located?

Puppy Manners is located at the beautiful Crystal Creek Farm, located just 30 minutes north of Seattle in Woodinville, Washington. The farm is home to Puppy Manners, Sol’s Members-Only Dog Park, and it’s also the Bishop family home. It sits on a stunning 5 acres surrounded by evergreen trees and hot air balloons that fly over in the summer months. For dogs, the farm is like heaven on earth — they can’t wait to get here!

  • What are your hours?

It depends on the service you’re interested in but most things are by appointment only. Email info@puppymanners.com if you’d like to schedule a visit.

Questions About Classes

FAQ

  • Do you use treats?

Yes, part of our approach includes using treats for positive reinforcement during training. We also have some of our favorite treats available for purchase in our Online Store.

  • Do you offer online classes?

Currently, we only have our previously recorded Puppaccino and Star-Barks classes available for purchase from our Online Store. We developed these recorded versions of our classes in response to the COVID19 pandemic when our students still desperately needed training help while quarantined at home. The feedback has been phenomenal and we now include these recorded versions of our classes with all our on-site classes for added support. We recommend you purchase these classes when our on-site classes are full and you need to begin training your puppy ASAP. Our students find them extremely helpful.

  • Can puppies attend class without all their vaccinations?

The short answer is YES, your puppy can still attend class, even if they’re not fully up to date on their vaccines or test positive for a parasite. Your puppy will not be able to participate in social play until they receive their age appropriate vaccines and get a clear fecal result. But don’t postpone training until after your puppy is up-to-date on their vaccinations! Socialization isn’t only about playing with other puppies. It’s about getting them outside, exposing them to different scenarios and people. Please read this article by Dr. RK Anderson, DVM about the vital importance of socialization and why postponing training could be a big mistake.

  • How many people can attend class?

We allow up to TWO people to attend class with their puppy or dog. Children under the age of 7 cannot attend class.

  • Can we attend with two puppies?

If you have two puppies or littermates, you’ll need to register both puppies for class and will need a second handler for the second puppy. We have some additional resources and information for those who get two puppies or littermates at the same time. You can email us at info@puppymanners.com to ask about those resources.

  • My dog is exhibiting aggression issues toward other dogs and/or people. Can your classes help?

We have some excellent trainers we like to refer to who specialize in helping with those puppies or dogs exhibiting behavioral issues like aggression, resource guarding, or even extreme shyness. Just email us at info@puppymanners.com so we can send you our recommendations!

  • How can I schedule a private lesson?

We have two amazing trainers available for private lessons. We offer 30-50 minute virtual consults as well as 60-90 minute lessons on location in Woodinville. Visit our Other Services page or email info@puppymanners.com to ask about scheduling.

  • Can I reserve a spot in a future class?

Unfortunately, there is no way for us to reserve seats on future enrollments. We suggest joining our Wait List, which we give advance notice for when classes are posted. This gives you the advantage of signing up as soon as classes are available for registration. If you aren’t available at the time that we post new classes (work schedule, traveling, etc.), we recommend asking a family member to get you registered when classes are posted. If you still need help, email us at info@puppymanners.com and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

  • What classes do you offer?

We have three class types: Puppy Jumpstart, Puppaccino, and Star-Barks. Our Puppy Jumpstart class is a 90-minute class over three weeks and covers all the basics for training a new puppy under 5-6 months old. Similarly, our Puppaccino class also tackles training basics, but classes are 60 minutes over five weeks. Our Star-Barks class is the next class up from Puppy Jumpstart and Puppaccino, which helps fine tune those basic training skills you learned in your foundations class as well as introducing more advanced skills like leash walking and recall. Star-Barks is geared for puppies or dogs older than 5-6 months of age. If you’ve adopted your dog and they are older than 5-6 months, you’ll still want to register for Star-Barks and not Puppy Jumpstart or Puppaccino, even if you haven’t enrolled in class before. Email us at info@puppymanners.com if you’re not sure which class you need.

  • Do you offer refunds?

Our general policy is we reserve the right not to refund after 7 days of your purchase. Of course, we understand life happens and things can change at the drop of a hat. If you need to cancel your enrollment for any reason, please email us so that we can have the opportunity to refill your seat. Our classes fill up every session and seats are highly coveted, so if you need to give yours up, we just ask that you let us know as soon as possible.

  • What other training services do you offer?

Beyond our Star-Barks class, we offer private one-on-one lessons, virtual consultations, and our lead trainier, George Chaney, offers board & train programs through his affiliate company, PupStop. Email him at george@puppymanners.com for more information about additional training services.
